Statement
My name is Kelly Crowe and I am an assistant professor of biology at Mount St. Joseph University, a liberal arts university in Cincinnati, OH. My laboratory group of dedicated undergraduate research students focuses on therapeutic biomarker development for the rare muscle disease GNE myopathy. I am interested in serving as Associate Director of the North Central Region because of my dedication to Sigma Xi and its role in developing the next generation of scientists and engineers. Sigma Xi has played an important role in my career development; as a graduate student, I served as the Director of Education and Outreach for The Ohio State University Chapter of Sigma Xi, during which time the “Meet-A-Scientist” community outreach program I spearheaded was selected as a Sigma Xi Chapter Program of Excellence. I am also a member of the Executive Committee of the University of Cincinnati Chapter of Sigma Xi and am currently serving as Vice-President/President Elect for that chapter. These seminal experiences have helped me to become the scientist that I am today and I am dedicated to helping Sigma Xi spread that experience to future trainees.
The world is currently facing an unprecedented global crisis at the intersection of research, scientific literacy, and public policy. I believe that Sigma Xi is well poised to be a strong voice to legislators and the public on the importance of scientific inquiry. With this in mind, one critical aspect of Sigma Xi’s mission is to enrich scientific research and influence policy related to science and technology. I aim to continue Sigma Xi’s work in building a robust, active, and diverse research community to support these goals. One specific priority for me would be to enhance communication between the national Sigma Xi organization and the local chapters of the north central region to facilitate effective dissemination of opportunities and resources. Only by coordinating our efforts can we achieve these goals and enhance scientific research.
Another crucial aspect of Sigma Xi’s mission is to educate the public about scientific research. Especially in the current crisis, public scientific literacy is crucial for the future of our society. Scientific communication has been a long-standing passion of mine; throughout my career as a biomedical researcher and educator, I have worked to make science engaging and accessible to the public by leading scientific outreach committees, speaking to patient groups, and collaboratively developing science education events for both students and adults. Through these ventures, I aim to share scientific research with the public in an engaging and accessible way. As such, a second priority for me would be to support Sigma Xi’s efforts to boost the public perception of scientific research through facilitation of chapter-based scientific outreach and education efforts in the region.
