Statement
As a first generation college student in my family, I have strong feelings about the value of education in shaping an individual‘s life. I am proud to have passed that value onto my children, now all involved in a scientific or technical career. Fostering an interest in the sciences is one way of returning that gift of education and one we can all share. As members of the scientific community, we all share the rich history of discovery and innovation that has shaped the world we live in today.
With the limited and most precious of our commodities, time, it can be challenging for the physician, the researcher, the scientist to make the time to mentor others along this path. It is however, one of the most rewarding aspects of any profession, at least I know it has been for me. Perhaps it is because I remember being that young student, needing some direction, and the importance that a dedicated teacher played in the development of my career.
As researchers, physicians, and scientists, one of the great challenges we are facing, is the massive amount of misinformation that is now so readily available to everyone through the Internet. This has never been more apparent, than now, with the current COVID-19 epidemic and the excessive amount of false information circulating. We have an obligation to make sure that accurate information is being put forth. Developing information on complex issues that affect society that is easily understandable to the general population, is an important task. Because of the broad spectrum of specialties within its membership, Sigma Xi is uniquely positioned to undertake this function.
As a truly international community of scientists and researchers without borders, Sigma Xi can be a leader dedicated to the advancement of the sciences for the benefit of all.
