Statement
Over my many years as a scientist and researcher I have strived to give back to my community, in part, through service to professional organizations to which I belong. However, my service record has mainly been focused on organizations that represent my specific discipline, earth sciences. As my research interests have developed, and the need to solve complex environmental problems has evolved, I have found the overwhelming need to become more interdisciplinary. A specific example of this in my career would be my leadership role as a physical scientist in leading one of NSF's Long-Term Ecological Research programs. Thus I view such interdisciplinary professional organizations as SIGMA XI more and more important in supporting, and promoting science and technology.
If elected to the Nominations Committee for the North Central Region, I will bring my knowledge/experience from many years working with scientists and engineers that are not from my own background to the table in helping to nominate the best candidates for leadership roles in the organization.
