Gold Key Award

The Gold Key Award is the highest honor bestowed by Sigma Xi. It is presented to a member who has made extraordinary contributions to his or her profession and has fostered critical innovations to enhance the health of the research enterprise, to cultivate integrity in research, or to promote the public understanding of science for the purpose of improving the human condition.  



The Gold Key Award recipient is nominated by Sigma Xi members, selected by the Executive Committee.  Upon acceptance of the award, the recipient, receives a gold Sigma Xi key and is invited to address, either remotely or in person, the attendees at the International Forum on Research Excellence (IFoRE), powered by Sigma X.

Nomination packets for potential recipients of the Gold Key award should be submitted by February 15 and include:

  1. A one-page letter of nomination that addresses the following:

    • impact of the nominee's work on the current and future state of physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, technology or social and behavioral sciences

    • how the nominee’s work has resulted in new approaches, new ways of thinking, or led to especially promising areas of inquiry

    • the nominee’s influence on education through publications, teaching activities, outreach, mentoring, etc.

    • how the nominee has fostered inclusion, advanced equity and cultivated integrity across research disciplines

    • how the nominee has improved the public’s understanding of science

    • how the scientific community has recognized these accomplishments

    • nominee’s ability to address, either remotely or in person, the attendees of Sigma Xi’s Annual Meeting in a dynamic, engaging manner that is readily understood by scientists across the disciplines

  2. Two additional letters of support of no more than one page each.

  3. A current curriculum vita that follows the Sigma Xi criteria for curricula vitae.

  4. Completed nomination packets should be sent to: executiveoffice@sigmaxi.org.
