The Genetic Analysis of High Risk Athletes for the Presence of the DRD4 7 Variable Tandem Repeat
Dorian Yablin, State University of New York at Plattsburgh
The goal of this study was to find a statistically significant relationship between the 7+ repeat and its possible genetic influence on risk taking behavior.
Zebrafish as a MIA PaCa-2 Cell Xenotransplant Cancer Model
Phillip Kadev, Bronx High School of Science
The purpose of the experiment was to develop a method for the xenotransplantation of MIA PaCa-2 human cancer cells into zebrafish and to procedure for dissociating zebrafish samples for flow cytometry analysis without jeopardizing the structural integrity of the cells.
Analyzing the Effects of Electronic Cigarette Vapor on Gene Expression of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae
Rachel Auslander, Jordan Moldow, and Rodrigo Torrejon, Pine Crest School
In this study, we will be testing the effects of electronic cigarette vapor on qualitative gene expression of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We will analyze the amount of vapor exposure to ascertain the effects of the particulate matter on gene expression.
Altered gene expression of yeast from e-cigarette vapor exposure
Saager Jain, Zachary Shevin, and Tristan Wille, Pine Crest School
We are exploring the effects of e-cigarette vaping on gene expression of S. cerevisiae, using genes with human homologs so the results can be applied to humans, too, to an extent.
Protein profile of cells change rapidly upon application of vibration
Sam Law and Melonie Chipp, Hoover High School
We asked whether a force, like vibration, could change a cell within a short period of time, like 15 minutes. So, we scratched a cell culture of HeLa cells (human female cells of reproduction) so the cells would start to move and mounted them on a vibrating platform. Although, we did not see a regular change in moving, we report here that vibration changes the proteins found in the cell, particularly causing a vibrating cell to have less proteins in the 200 kD range than a cell without vibration.
Validating an Electroconvulsive Assay for Anti-Epileptic Drug Screening Using Drosophila melanogaster and Protein Kinase G
Matthew Dardet, Pine Crest School
The goal of my project is to develop and validate an electroconvulsive assay using a drosophila model that can be employed to discover new pharmacological treatments for epilepsy.
Novel Compounds Exhibit Structural Interaction with Prion-Related-Protein TIA-1
Ben Lipkin, The Bronx High School of Science
To examine the role of t-cell-restricted intracellular antigen 1 (TIA-1), we decided to find a way to manipulate this protein's ability to change confirmation and form aggregates.
