Statement
I have been a proud member of Sigma Xi for the past 10 years and feel that there are several elements of my time at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that make me an excellent candidate for the Associate Director’s Position for the Area Groups, Industries, State & Federal Laboratories constituency. First, I acted as the Vice-President for the NIST chapter, where I worked with the executive committee to organize the Annual Sigma Xi Postdoctoral Poster Presentations and Katharine Gebbie Young Investigator’s Award Lectures. More generally, I worked with NIST leadership to identify and nominate new members, both to bolster chapter membership and act as role models for early-career staff.
Second, NIST is a national laboratory within the U.S. Department of Commerce with a mission to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness through measurement science, standards, and technology. As such, my time as a staff member and group leader has provided direct ties to state and federal laboratories and industry, which are relevant to the scope of the constituency.
Third, I have held similar leadership positions at the local, national, and international levels through my involvement with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Society for Experimental Mechanics. My time in these roles has resulted in several multi-day, first-of-their-kind symposia and conferences, which could provide the basis for similar duties at the Sigma Xi Annual and Board of Directors meetings.
Finally, I am a firm believer in the Sigma Xi mission to act as a diverse organization that fosters companionship in science and engineering and advances knowledge through research, service, and teaching. I feel this should be an objective of all organizations devoted to science and engineering, and it would be my goal as Associate Director to bring this ideology to the area groups, industries, and laboratories in Sigma Xi through my active involvement with the Board of Directors and constituency membership.
