Statement
Sigma Xi is a multi-disciplinary research honor society that has members from colleges, industry, universities and other professional centers of excellence. What does Sigma Xi offer to the average professional? Some say it is the interdisciplinary nature while others say that is the American Scientist. I think it is these and more. The Society has developed collaborations over the last several years with AAAS and other professional societies that have added to its worth. The Society encourages research at all levels including high school, undergraduate, graduate and professional levels through such grants as the GIAR and the high school research journal. I would like to be a member of Board that will continue to develop more of these types of programs for Sigma Xi members.
While a member of the Board of Directors in the past, I witnessed many positive changes to the leadership of the Society. The current leadership has increased Sigma Xi’s presence in the science community by utilizing all that social media has to offer, and making the annual conference a symposium on a specific topic that is relevant to the community at large. The Board of Directors needs members that are familiar with what the young and mid-career professionals will find useful in order to increase the membership in the Society. I feel that I fill that bill since I have already served on the Board and am a mid-career professional.
The Northeast Region has an annual undergraduate and graduate student research conference each year which is one of its most successful events. I would hope to keep this event going during my term on the board. If elected, I would like to start a biannual newsletter for the region that will highlight events occurring in the region.
Sigma Xi and Other Activities: I served two consecutive terms on the Board of Directors from 2011-2017 representing the Northeast Region. During this time, I was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Board. I have served as Associate Director for the Northeast Region and Associate Director for the Baccalaureate Colleges Constituency Group. I have served on the Nominations committee which selects the nominees every year for President-elect of the Society. In addition, I have served as President of the College of Mount Saint Vincent Chapter since its inception in 2009.
Biographical Information: I have been an associate professor at the College of Mount Saint Vincent for the past 25 years. I received my doctorate from Arizona State University, masters from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and bachelors from Lakeland College.
