Candidate's Statement:

In my vision, Sigma Xi plays a critical important role in the knowledge production within the sciences as well as in disseminating the knowledge to other fields and to the society in general. As specialization trend intensifies in all fields under the umbrella of "science", it is getting more difficult and more important to build a thriving community that transcends disciplinary and sub-disciplinary boundaries. While we increasingly rely on virtual communities, a regional community is important in addressing specific circumstances and needs of a particular region. For example, California has undergone a unique version of the budget crisis in terms of the state budget for higher education. The regional section of Sigma Xi will provide a venue for concerned scientists and the society in general in addressing these region-specific situations.

For the last 14 years I have been a faculty member at University of California at Riverside, lived the budgetary crises, and navigated the crises as the Department Chair last two years. My experiences as a scientist and as an administrator in higher education will be helpful as I work toward the vision of Sigma Xi as the Associate Director of Southwest Sigma Xi.
