Diversity Grant

Application Deadline

March 1, annually

Sigma Xi is committed to the diversification of its membership, its programs, and the broader scientific and engineering research community. The Society encourages participation of individuals from groups that are historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by promoting active engagement of the full diversity of the membership.

The Diversity Program Grant provides up to $1,000 in ‘seed money’ for chapters to initiate innovative diversity programs which promote inclusion of individuals from underrepresented groups. Diversity may reflect gender, race, ethnicity, mental of physical disability, socioeconomic status, age, religious affiliation, cultural background, national origin, or sexual orientation. Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with other Sigma Xi chapters or identify matching support from other resources that can enhance the effectiveness of their proposed initiatives. Grants are normally awarded for new projects as a onetime source of support.

Applications will be reviewed by the Committee on Qualifications and Membership, and the evaluation process will prioritize projects that align with one or more of the following criteria:

  • Degree of innovation and initiative in designing an individual program (including uniqueness, creative use of resources)
  • Extent of impact on the community (i.e., the size and diversity of the audience, outreach and exposure)
  • Strategy for achieving outcomes and indicators of success
  • Degree of sustained involvement, particularly in increasing participation of underrepresented groups in STEM
  • Ability to be replicated broadly throughout Sigma Xi and by other chapters

Applicants will be notified of the Committee's decision with 90 days. It is expected that results from funded diversity programs will be presented at the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting in the year following the award.
