Membership

Sigma Xi membership connects members to thousands of research scientists and engineers around the world – across disciplines, nations and even generations. The Sigma Xi network of members will open your world to potential collaborators and introduce you to prospective employers and mentors – connecting you to colleagues for life!

Identifying New Members

One of Sigma Xi’s greatest strengths is its diverse and multidisciplinary membership that is dedicated to science and society. As our community grows, so do the resources and the networking and professional development opportunities. As a Sigma Xi member, you have demonstrated your commitment to enhancing the research enterprise, to promoting science, and to cultivating the next generation of STEM professionals. Chapter officers and members are highly encouraged to reach out to potential members with an invitation to join this community of excellence. Who are the potential members in your circle?

  • A colleague who recently published in a peer reviewed journal
  • A young investigator in you department/college
  • A colleague you met at a research conference
  • A postdoc fellow in your lab or in the lab next door
  • An undergraduate or a graduate student who recently presented at a research conference

Member Retention

Retaining existing members is a key indicator of how well your chapter is meeting its mission and keeping members engaged.  Mathematically, retention is defined as the number of renewals divided by the number of members who are eligible to renew. Chapters are encouraged to develop a retention strategy that involves continuous communication on the value of Sigma Xi membership. Please consider scheduling  regular outreach messages to your inactive members with an invitation to renew their membership. You can do this through your chapter's Inactive Member community. Suggested talking points:

  • Invitation to rejoin the Society, and introduction to the Value of Membership
  • Invitation to a chapter meeting or an upcoming event
  • Overview of newer initiatives in the Society and their goals such as Sigma Xi Speaks, the Affiliate Circle, Sigma Xi Communities, or the Sigma Xi Career Center
  • Share the 2019 Annual Report for data and stories on recent accomplishments and the Society's impact
  • Ask them why they lapsed and please feel free to share the responses with HQ. Is it lack of interest, busy schedule, not finding the organization relevant to their careers…etc.?  They can share their feedback anonymously here.

Sigma Xi chapters are highly encouraged to invite students who may not qualify for membership to the join the Affiliate Circle as a first step in their professional careers.
