1997 Honorary Member
Time magazine senior science correspondent J. Madeleine Nash will be inducted as an honorary member of Sigma Xi during the annual meeting in New Orleans in March, 1997. Nash specializes in science and technology reporting for Time. Over the course of her career, she has reported and written at least a dozen memorable cover stories, including “How Life Began” (October 11, 1993), “Hope in the War Against Cancer” (April 25, 1994), and “Evolution’s Big Bang” (December 4, 1995). A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Nash graduated cum laude in 1965 from Bryn Mawr College with an AB in History and joined Time as a “clip girl.” She rose rapidly through the ranks, becoming a reporter-researcher for the magazine in 1966 and, in 1970, a full-time stringer for the Time bureaus in Bonn, Germany and Chicago. She was named staff correspondent in 1974 and became senior science correspondent in 1987. Nash and her colleagues are two-time recipients of the AAAS-Westinghouse Award for the cover stories “Smash: Colossal Colliders Are Unlocking the Secrets of the Universe” (April 16, 1990) and “Wiring the Future: The Superconductivity Revolution” (May 11, 1987). In 1994 she won the Leukemia Society of America Award for her cover story on cancer.
