Report of the Committee on Grants-in-Aid of Research
for the Year Ending June 30, 1999
The Committee on
Grants-in-Aid of Research met two times during fiscal year 1999 to review 1,082
applications of which 396 or 37 percent received full or partial funding. A total of
$292,472 was awarded with an average grant size of $740. The accompanying tables show the
distribution of applications, awards, and monies among the various areas under which
individuals submit proposals. The names of the recipients, their institutions, proposal
titles and award amounts are are posted on the Sigma Xi web site.
Data from the GIAR applications reflect the Society's
role in supporting research conducted by different groups of students. In FY 1999, for
example, awards were distributed as follows:
| Group |
Number of
Applications |
Number of Awards |
| Male |
515 (48%) |
191 (48%) |
| Female |
567 (52%) |
204 (52%) |
| Graduate Students |
941 (87%) |
341 (86%) |
| Undergraduate Students |
141 (13%) |
54 (14%) |
The monies available for Grants-in-Aid of
Research come from unrestricted and restricted categories. Examples of the former are the
$2 dues allocation from regular members and interest income from the Society's research
endowment. The Committee is especially grateful for the donations being made through the
Society's annual giving campaign. Examples of restricted categories are the interest from
endowed funds established by individuals or groups for the purpose of supporting research
on particular topics and monies from the National Academy of Sciences which are
administered by Sigma Xi.
I express sincere appreciation to each of the committee
members for their dedicated service. Appreciation is also extended to the several
individuals who served as guest readers and to Deborah M. Donati, Programs Coordinator of
Sigma Xi.
