Report of the Committee on Nominations
for the Year ending June 30, 2005

The Committee on Nominations was required to select at least two nominees for the office of President-elect to be placed before the November 2005 Assembly of Delegates. The individual elected by the November 2005 Assembly for the office of President-elect would serve one year from 1 July 2006 and would then serve as President of the Society for the year beginning 1 July 2007. The Committee also was required to select two nominees for the office of Treasurer to be placed before the November 2005 Assembly of Delegates. The Committee on Nominations worked with the Treasurer's Search Committee to identify nominees for the Treasurer's position. The individual elected by the November 2005 Assembly would serve for four years from 1 July 2006. Additionally, the Committee was required to select three to five nominees from nominations solicited electronically from the active members of the membership-at-large for the office of Director of the Membership-at-Large. This Director would be elected by the active members of the membership-at-large through an electronic ballot, prior to the November 2005 Assembly. The individual elected by the membership-at-large would serve for three years from 1 July 2005.

The Committee on Nominations met by telephone conference call to select nominees for the offices of President-elect, Treasurer, and Director of the membership-at-large. It was understood that only full, active members of Sigma Xi could stand as nominees for office in the Society. A telephone call on January 26th for approximately one hour permitted the committee to discuss the mechanics of the nomination process. Members had previously received an email communication concerning the deadliness for the committee. A second telephone call on April 6, 2005 occurred to discuss the nominees for President-elect and Director of the Membership-at-Large whose names had previously been circulated. These circulated lists included the name(s) of the nominator(s), the nominees and his/her career achievements as well as Sigma Xi participation. Each nominee for President-elect was discussed in turn by the nominator and general discussion followed. Each nominee for Director of the Membership-at-Large also was reviewed and discussed. The Committee agreed on a shortened list of nominees for the Director's position for the balloting. It was understood that within 72 hours of the conference call, the Committee would select a ranked slate of nominees for President-elect and a similar slate for Director of Membership-at-Large. Following each ballot, the top ranked candidate for President-elect was to be approached by a Society representative to determine the candidate's willingness to serve. This process was continued until two nominees agreed to stand as candidates for election at the November 2005 Annual Meeting to be held in Seattle. Five nominees were selected following balloting on May 2, 2005 for Director of the Membership-at-Large and were presented electronically to the active members-at-large for election.

From the list of excellent nominees, Vera Alexander of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and James W. Porter, of the University of Georgia were selected and agreed to serve as candidates for election to the office of President-elect by the 2005 Assembly of Delegates. Dr. Alexander is Assistant Health Provost for Fisheries and Oceans Policy at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and Dr. Porter is Professor of Ecology at the University of Georgia and also is President of the University of Georgia Chapter of Sigma Xi.

The Committee would like to thank the excellent work of the Treasurer's Search Committee in providing the names of two outstanding candidates for Treasurer: S. Gaylen Bradley of Pennsylvania State University and Richard L. Meyer of Portland, Oregon. Dr. Bradley is Senior Associate Director for Research Affairs at the College of Medicine, Pennsylvania State University, and Dr. Meyer is Professor Emeritus of the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and currently serves as Sigma Xi's Treasurer.

The Committee selected an outstanding slate of nominees for the position of Director of the Membership-at-Large consisting of: Robert Andres, the University of North Dakota; Richard Guillory, retired, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii, Honolulu; Vijay Kowtha, Office of Naval Research Global, U.K.; Raymond Lutz, retired, University of Texas at Dallas; and Steven Schwartz, Brunel University, U.K. In an extremely close election, Dr. Richard J. Guillory was elected.

The Chair would like to thank the entire Committee for their help in the Committee's work this year. Everyone was most dedicated and cooperative. The Committee members are most grateful for the excellent support provided by Dr. Evan Ferguson during the deliberations - you make it all seem so easy.
