Special Session on the role of Science in addressing the challenges of Water

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 22, 2008

Title: Water - Science, Society & Sustainability

Theme: In our collective march towards a sustainable society, under the looming clouds of climate change and increasing population, water needs to be urgently understood within a complex system-of-systems framework. Water has been extensively studied within the context of a number of separate natural and social science systems - in both the basic sciences & in the applied fields (engineering, geothermal sciences, public health, for example). Sigma-Xi, as an honor society whose membership includes experts from virtually all walks of science and engineering, is uniquely positioned to bring together luminaries to address the challenges of water in the context of the complex interactions of the systems of Science & Society - to provide pathways for a sustainable planet.

Possible topics

  • Redistribution of rainfall owing to Climate Change.
  • Technologies for Exploring & Managing Subsurface Water.
  • Greening the Desert.
  • Efficient and Economical Practices for Water Capture, Distribution & Usage.
  • Coupling of renewable energy systems to water systems.
