SIGMA XI, THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH SOCIETY
Report of the Committee on Grants-in-Aid of Research
For the Year Ending 30 June 2011

The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research Program is now in its eighty-ninth year. The Committee on Grants-in-Aid of Research held two meetings during fiscal year 2011. During the meetings, the Committee reviewed a total of 1,805 applications, of which 415 (23%) received full or partial funding. A total of $337,779 was awarded. The accompanying table shows the distribution of applications, awards, and funds among the science and engineering disciplines. The names of the recipients, their institutions, and project titles are listed on the Sigma Xi web site.

Although the Society no longer allocates $4 from member dues, support from members and interest income from the Society's research endowment continues to be an essential to the GIAR program. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences, which are administered by Sigma Xi, provide valuable additional resources for the program.

Funds from the National Academy and from private donors are frequently restricted by discipline, institution or geographic location. Therefore, the Committee notes the continued importance of membership support as vital to equitable funding among the various disciplines.

The following Sigma Xi members served on the Grants-In-Aid of Research Committee during fiscal year 2011:

Emma Samantha Creaser - Unity College
Richard Dillaman, University of North Carolina at Wilmington
Shawn Michael Ellerbroek - Wartburg College
Anthony Elbie Glenn - USDA, ARS Russell Research Center
Amy Michele Grunden - North Carolina State University
Peter Jurgen Harries - University of South Florida

Patrick Lewis, Sam Houston State University
Cecil H. McManus - Center for Survey Research, Shaw University
Sue Ann Miller - Hamilton College
Frank E. Price - Hamilton College
Matthew Paul Rowe - Sam Houston State University

I express sincere appreciation to all of the committee and guest readers for their dedicated service to the program.

Emma Creaser, Ph.D
Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research Committee Chair
