Henry (Gus) A. Buchtel
North Central Regional Director
Associate Professor of Psychology in the Psychiatry and Psychology Departments of the University of Michigan and Chief of the Neuropsychology Section in the Mental Health Service of the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI.

Dr. Buchtel received a B.A. in Psychology from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in Physiological Psychology from McGill University in Montreal Canada. He was a UNESCO Research Fellow in the Istituto di Fisiologia at the University of Pisa Italy and a Visiting Professor in the Istituto di Fisiologia Umana at the University of Parma. He was a neuropsychologist in the Psychology Department at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Queen Square, London England and an MRC Fellow at the Montreal Neurological Institute, which is where he began working with epilepsy surgery patients whose seizures could not be controlled with medication. He has continued carrying out research on this patient population since that time. He is currently in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a staff psychologist at the VA Hospital where he carries out clinical and scholarly work with patients with brain damage. He is on the editorial boards of Cortex and The Journal of Experimental and Clinical Neuropsychology, and serves on the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. He is Director of Psychology Training in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, overseeing a postdoctoral program with 18 psychology postdoctoral residents.

Dr. Buchtel was elected to Sigma Xi while a graduate student at McGill University and has served as a Chapter Officer in the University of Michigan Chapter in various capacities (President, Secretary and Council Member). He is currently Membership Secretary in the Chapter and has been the Chapter's delegate to the National Assembly of Delegates on numerous occasions. He has served on the Presidential Nominations Committee and was Associate Director of the North Central Region before becoming the Director.
