Andrew Velkey earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in experimental psychology at the University of Montana, after graduating from Millsaps College with a B.S. in psychology. He began his academic career at UM as an assistant program evaluator in the Department of Community and Government Studies. He was an assistant professor of psychology at Mississippi College from 1997-2001 and joined the faculty at Christopher Newport University in 2001 as an assistant professor. He has published in the American Journal of Primatology, Journal of General Psychology Behavioural Processes, Cognitive Technology, Creighton Law Review, Perceptual & Motor Skills and Psychopharmacology. He is currently researching territoriality and aggression in Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta splendens), the reinforcing properties of the aggressive encounters between resident and invading male fish and the effects of xenoestrogens at sub-toxic levels on reproductively-relevant behavior in B. splendens.
