Jim Baur is president of Science Solutions Inc., a technology transfer company headquartered in Charleston, West Virginia, and is active in science-related projects in the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. Through a subtle progression of optics, oceanology and metallurgy, Science Solutions Inc. became involved in mining and minerals production activities in Russia and Mongolia, including efforts to understand and assist the tungsten mining community in that area. Baur received his Ph.D. in experimental physics at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics, a cooperative program of the University of Colorado and the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. Prior to joining Science Solutions Inc., Baur spent 15 years in magnetic fusion energy research on TOKAMAK devices, a Russian invention, and previously was on the physics faculty and served as Physics Laboratory Director at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York. A life member of Sigma Xi, Baur served seven years as Chair of the International Committee and served since 1986 in three different capacities as a member of the Board of Directors before his election as President.
