RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC - Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society moved into the new Sigma Xi Center today at 3106 E. N.C. Highway 54 here.
The two-story, 52,000-square-foot facility is the new home of the 70,000-member science and engineering research society's program and administrative offices, as well as the editorial and pre-press production offices of its award-winning magazine, American Scientist.
Founded in 1886, Sigma Xi has 517 chapters at colleges and universities, industrial research centers and government laboratories in North America and overseas. Over the years, the international honor society has counted nearly 200 Nobel laureates among its members. Sigma Xi moved to Research Triangle Park from New Haven, Conn., in 1990.
Executive Director Patrick D. Sculley said that the additional space and upgraded technology in the new $9-million facility will enhance chapter support and member services. It will also allow growth and enhancement of the Society's programs in support of science and engineering.
Construction on the Sigma Xi Center began in March. An official opening celebration is planned for next April. Teer Associates served as developer for the building, which was designed by Little Diversified Architectural Consulting.
"We wanted our new building to reflect the joy of discovery and the satisfaction our members derive from research, and the architects certainly fulfilled that ambition," Sculley said.
A dramatic spiral staircase in the lobby is among the building's architectural features. One wing of the Sigma Xi Center includes a Hall of Honor where the names of Nobel Prizewinning members are inscribed on granite panels.
"We anticipate that the Sigma Xi Center will be a popular gathering place for members and other visitors," Sculley said, "a place to commemorate the accomplishments of science and engineering and promote the future health of the research enterprise."
He said the multi-purpose auditorium in the new facility has been named in honor of the Research Triangle Foundation and the Triangle Universities Center for Advanced Studies, Inc. (TUCASI) in honor of a $1-million gift to the building fund.
The Society's capital campaign has reached a third of its $9-million goal. As part of the campaign, members and friends can honor others with a gift to the building fund. Gifts of any size will be acknowledged in a Roll of Honor on the Society's Web site and on an interactive display to be installed in the lobby of the new building next spring.
For contributions of $1,000 or more, payable over three years if preferred, the names of those honored, along with those honoring them, will be etched into paving stones in the Sigma Xi Center plaza for permanent display.
Naming opportunities for various spaces in the new building are available to recognize larger gifts. For more information, contact development@sigmaxi.org or call 800-243-6534 or 919-549-4691. All donations to Sigma Xi are tax-deductible in the U.S. and Canada.
