Chapters » Overview

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society has more than 500 chapters in North America and around the world. Truly a grass-roots organization, Sigma Xi boasts an array of chapter activities that have noticeable impact not only at the local level, but at the national and international levels as well. The interdisciplinary nature of Sigma Xi chapters allows members to unite with colleagues and to address a range of issues that bridge the disciplines. Chapter activities span a multitude of program areas and serve to support the mission of the Society. While chapters function fairly independently, they receive ongoing support from Society leadership and staff. Resources and opportunities, along with case studies and administrative guidelines, help chapter leaders to network and to develop robust services for local members. The Sigma Xi Annual Meeting offers programmatic support to chapter leaders through training, discussions and information exchange.

We really encourage undergraduate students to
do research and by having an active chapter of
Sigma Xi, that allows us to provide special recognition
for the students who go above and beyond the normal
level of participation in research.

—Vicki L. Cameron, Sigma Xi member since 1988

A chapter is a laboratory for the goals of
Sigma Xi to see if they can be applied on the scene.

—V. Elving Anderson, Sigma Xi president 1982-1983
