Expanding Your Horizons

Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics is a career conference for girls in grades 6, 7 & 8. It consisted of approximately 40 different “hands-on” workshops of about an hour each throughout a single day. Each girl attended 4 different workshops, a keynote address, additional demonstrations and a luncheon. The workshops and demonstrations introduced girls to various activities and careers in science, technology, and mathematics. Girls from all over the middle Tennessee area participated. “Scholarships” and busing arrangements assured a mixture of girls from many different types of communities and different social and ethnic backgrounds. Parents, teachers and girl scout troop leaders attended sessions that focus on gender equity issues and how to help their girls succeed in science and math.   • disseminate important findings generated by student research;
  • provide an opportunity for full student involvement in the final step of the scientific method, namely publication;
  • serve as a public relations tool by showcasing the accomplishments of students; and
  • promote interdepartmental faculty and student collaboration.
