1. A special colloquium by Professor S. James Gates was held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Howard University. The event was followed by a reception honoring Professor S. James Gates, former Chair of the department and recipient of the 2011 National Medal of Science, and Dr. George Carruthers, 2011 awardee of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, presented to them by President Barack Obama.

2. The annual Hawthorne Lecture, named after Edward Hawthorne, former Dean of the Graduate School, was held on Friday, November 16, 2012. Dr. Michelle Albert served as the Keynote Speaker for this Hawthorne Lecture in the College of Medicine at Howard University. The focus of this lecture was be on Cardiovascular research.
