Minutes of the Business Meeting of ISU-IWU Chapter of Sigma Xi


Date: May 4, 2004

President Laura Vogel called the meeting to order.

The minutes of June 19, 2003 meeting were approved.

Ken Jesse requested those financial records 5 years or more old be destroyed. Permission was granted. He reported that the treasury has a balance of $1290.68 but a deposit of $13.00 (refund from destroyed M.O. for Nancy Nichols) and a bill of $720.50 (Banquet) will be transacted. In addition the $357.50 for 23 initiates has not been received from IWU.

The Nominations Committee's slate of officers was elected by unanimous vote. The list of committees and members follows these minutes.

President-elect Steven Hoffmann discussed plans for the coming year which includes 3 or 4 programs involving speakers at both universities.

Marge Jones suggested that there be one or more students on the program committee.

Jim Carter suggested that one program be a panel discussion, with topics such as:
Science versus Creationism
Science and Politics
Science and Ethics
Science and Education

At the initiation banquet, held April 5, 2004, 26 Associate members were initiated into Sigma Xi. Ms. Darci J. Harland, biology teacher from Gridley High School received the Outstanding Science and Math Teacher award. The guest speaker was Dr. Nancy Nichols from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Peoria. The title of her talk was: NCAUR, Where the Future is Created: Ethanol Research at the USDA lab.

According to the Chapter Bylaws the President is an ex-officio member of all committees except the Nominations Committee of which he/she chairs.

The Executive Committee consists of the President, President-elect, Secretary/Treasurer, and the immediate Past President.
