Berkeley Grants in Aid of Research Program
The Berkeley Chapter of Sigma Xi makes annual awards of Grants-in-Aid-for-Research to graduate and undergraduate students in science and engineering departments at Berkeley. ("science" includes both the natural and social sciences.) These awards are modest, generally in the range of $300 to $500, and are intended for support of direct expenses incurred by the students in the conduct of their research. Consumable supplies and travel costs associated with the conduct of research are the most commonly supported budget items. (The chapter does not support conference travel.)
Application Information:
To minimize formality, we require only: (1) A letter of application which should identify the candidate, his or her present position and degree information, provide a project title, and contain a reliable local mailing address, email address, and phone number (campus addresses are fine if the applicants have them); (2) A short (one page) description of the project; (3) An itemized budget; (4) A letter of support from the applicant's advisor.
Applications and letters of support may be sent electronically to Ellen Simms. Application forms for Grants-In-Aid of Research can be downloaded online (pdf, Rich Text, or Word format), or requested from the Berkeley President (Ellen Simms). The deadline for all application materials is February 15. If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, applications will be accepted on the next business day. For questions or additional information you may send e-mail to Ellen Simms. Applicants are notified by e-mail of the Committee's decisions within twelve weeks after each application deadline.
Also, the National Office of Sigma Xi has competitions for Grants-in-Aid of Research for graduate and undergraduate students twice each year and students on the Berkeley campus are urged to apply for these grants as well. Information about national grants can be obtained from the National Office through their Web site or by e-mail to: giar@sigmaxi.org. Applications for national grants can be submitted interactively via the above Web site. The annual deadlines for national grants are March 15 and October 15.
