Berkeley Grants in Aid of Research Program
The Berkeley Chapter of Sigma Xi makes annual awards of Grants-in-Aid-of-Research (GIAR) to graduate and undergraduate students in science and engineering departments at Berkeley. ("science" includes both the natural and social sciences as well as engineering.) These awards are modest, generally in the range of $300 to $500, and are intended for support of direct expenses incurred by the students in the conduct of their research. Consumable supplies and travel costs associated with the conduct of research are the most commonly supported budget items. (The chapter does not support conference travel.) Awardees are also nominated to the society and their initiation fee and first year's membership costs are provided.
To apply, please send:
(1) A completed application form in either (pdf, Rich Text, or Word format), which should contain a reliable local mailing address (for award check), email address (for award notification), phone number, and detailed budget;
(2) A short (one page or less) description of the project;
(3) The applicant's cv;
(4) The applicant's Sigma Xi membership number OR a completed application for associate membership (either this Word or
nomination form) (please be sure to check the affiliate with chapter box and the bottom of the form and indicate the UC Berkeley chapter);
(5) A letter of support from the applicant's advisor (briefly confirming importance of the proposal to the student's studies). When submitting your application, please provide the name and email address of your advisor.
Applications and letters of support may be sent electronically to the 2014 GIAR Committee Chair Kevin Padian.
The 2014 deadline for all application materials is 11:59 pm, March 3. For questions or additional information you may send e-mail to Kevin Padian. Applicants are notified by e-mail of the Committee's decisions by April 15.
