Sigma Xi Fall Meeting - Friday 10 September, 2010

Event: Keynote Lecture by Linda Blockus “Research on Undergraduate Research”
Date: 10 September, 2010
Time: 12:00 noon
Location: Eckles Hall at the Cafeteria (Lunch at 11:30 before the Lecture)

An undergraduate research experience has long been recognized as a great way to engage science
majors. However MU is not the only institution that recognizes the value of such experiences. The
‘business’ of undergraduate research has grown tremendously over the past two decades, spreading
across institutional types, gaining support from funding agencies, and being adopted by other
academic disciplines. At the same time, a body of scholarly literature has emerged that describes the
impact and efficacy of the undergraduate research experience. Dr. Blockus will provide a national
view of undergraduate research and highlight important components of the undergraduate research
experience based on research studies and her own experiences.

Linda Blockus is the director of undergraduate research at MU. She earned her bachelor's degree in
biology at Dartmouth College and a master's degree in educational leadership from Boston University.
She earned her Ph.D. from Mizzou in higher education with support areas in black studies and
educational and counseling psychology.
