Dr. Van Auken received his BS from High Point University, and his MS and PhD from The University of Utah.

His research interest is physiological plant ecology, espesilly gase exchange phenomena as well as plant-plant species interactions. Currently he is studying species interactions in temperate woodlands and grasslands of both common and rare species. His goal is to understand interference or competition and its role in determining species distribution as well as the role of disturbances due to community development.
