PERI Prize for Public Understanding of Science
The Charlotte Chapter of Sigma Xi has been granted funds by the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) to award a prize of $500.00 for the encouragement and enhancement of public understanding of science and technology. The Prize will be awarded annually at the Sigma Xi Charlotte Chapter Science Celebration.
The prize competition is open to any active (i.e. dues-paid) member of the Charlotte Chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, including any new members who you might nominate before the deadline. Please note that if your dues payments have lapsed, you may renew by going to www.sigmaxi.org and pay. You do not have to pay dues from past years to be reinstated.
Active members are invited to submit a reprint of any item of their published research from the beginning of the Year 1999. The reprint must be accompanied by a 400-500 word description of the research and its implication for Society in prose suitable for an interested Public. Award of the prize will be based primarily on the clarity and effectiveness of the cover page, whilst taking account of the importance of the research in its formal presentation. For publications with multiple authors the principal author must be identified in the submission and distribution of the award among the authors will be her/his responsibility.
The Award Committee is co-chaired by Mary and Ted Sherburne, formerly of Science Service. Sigma Xi will call on the Charlotte Area Science Network (CASN) and members of local media organizations to aid in the selection of the winner. No members of the Charlotte Chapter will serve on the Committee.
If you have questions about the prize you may contact Dr. Linda Simpson, Secretary/Treasurer of the Chapter at lmsimpso@email.uncc.edu.
