Simple Structures, Fascinating Functions
When: Thursday, November 17th, 2011, Reception @ 12:00 m
Where: Faraday West 227
Chemists, and specifically synthetic organic chemists, often find themselves pursuing the simultaneous simplification and amplification of nature's designs. Whether trying to create artificial systems to create new biologically relevant molecules, synthetic polymers, or sensors, chemists constantly strive to not only match but hopefully exceed the efficiency and scope of naturally occurring phenomena. This talk will discuss work in a variety of realms within organic chemistry, all working towards the goal of creating simple structures with fascinating functions.
Assistant Professor Marc J. Adler joined the NIU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in August 2011. Marc was born and raised in San Diego, California. He completed his B.S. degree at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2003. He then moved to Durham, North Carolina, to pursue his Ph.D. degree from Duke University, which he received in 2008. Marc spent a year performing post-doctoral research at Yale University before moving to the University of Oxford, where he lived and worked for the past two years.
Research in Marc’s lab is centered around organic synthesis. His interests within this field are wide-ranging, from total synthesis to fundamental physical organic chemistry. Synthesis and evaluation of intriguing molecules, from natural products to molecules designed for biological applications to molecular switches to organocatalysts, will be the focus of his lab’s efforts. He also has a keen interest in brain chemistry and the pathology of a variety of neurological conditions.
