Micropulse Lidar Sensing of the Atmosphere

When: Thursday, April 28th, 2011, Reception @ 12:00 m
Where: Faraday West 227

Light detection and ranging (Lidar) is an active remote sensing tool that has been widely used for atmospheric studies for over 50 years. Lidar, the optical counter part of more familiar radar technique uses laser light for remote sensing of the atmosphere. A lidar system transmits a pulse of light into the atmosphere and analyzes the backscatter signal intensity from clouds, aerosols, and molecules as a function of time. The micropulse lidar (MPL) system is a compact and eye safe lidar capable of measuring the atmospheric constituents remotely using low energy laser pulses. This discussion will focus primarily on a brief overview of the MPL system and its applications for scientific studies and environmental monitoring.
