Professor Doraiswami Ramkrishna 2013 Research Award Recipient

Professor Ramkrishna is the Harry Creighton Peffer Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette and M. M. Sharma Distinguished Professor, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai U. He received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bombay in 1960, and his Ph.D. from University of Minnesota in 1965. He is a world leader in the application of mathematics to chemical engineering. His major research contributions have been in the development of novel mathematical frameworks to solve basic chemical engineering problems displaying deterministic and stochastic behaviors. His work is very multidisciplinary working with investigators from around the world. Just a few examples are application of multidimensional population balance modeling in the area of precipitation and crystallization processes, investigation of bubble columns with computational fluid dynamics and population balance models, cybernetic modeling for bioreaction and metabolic engineering (e.g., maximize productivity of bioethanol), application of population balance models for cancer chemotherapy (leukemia), and mathematical models for signal transduction processes connected with transferring drug resistance between different cells.
Professor Ramkrishna has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work, he was elected to be a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2009, he is a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Honorary Fellow of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers and Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Minnesota. His international awards include the Platinum Award from Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology, Jewel of Ruia (Outstanding Alumnus) Award Mumbai U., AIChE Thomas Baron Award in Fluid-Particle Systems, Senior Humboldt Award to visit the Max Planck Institute, AIChE Alpha Chi Sigma Award in Chemical Engineering and awards from Purdue University include, College of Science Team Award, College of Engineering Mentoring Award, College of Engineering Team Award and Purdue Research Excellence Award. He has published over 232 technical papers and three books.
