Cornell University Grant Information
The Cornell University chapter of Sigma Xi has a granting program for undergraduate and graduate students that is separate from the better-known national Sigma Xi grant program. 75% of awards granted are reserved for graduate student members of Sigma Xi and undergraduates must be Sigma Xi members to apply for research funds. These funds are to be used to support current or future scientific investigations.
Our research support grants typically are made in amounts up to $800 (graduate students) and $400 (undergraduate students). There is a limit of one award per student during each calendar year.
The deadline for receipt of applications is 5pm, February 22nd, 2013.
Research proposals are evaluated on the basis of their intellectual rigor, potential for success, contribution towards the student's professional development, and appropriateness of budget. Funding can not be provided for faculty/staff, for hiring research assistants, or for other salaries. It is strategic to place the budget of your Sigma Xi proposal in the larger fiscal context of your project: how will this award allow you to accomplish your research? Budgets that come across as vague or padded are unlikely to garner support. Evidence that you are seeking support from many granting sources is considered a definite positive.
A Grant Application Form is available via the web link above. Note that we now ask only for the name of your research supervisor; we may contact that person in the unlikely event that we have specific questions about your status or progress, but we no longer require any formal letters of recommendation.
Please send your proposals as a single MS Word file to: Mike Webster E-Mail. Please title your file YOURLASTNAMESigXi.doc
We encourage grant recipients to present results from Sigma Xi sponsored research at the Spring Research Symposium!
Sigma Xi National also awards student research grants independently. All national grant applications are accepted online at the Sigma Xi National site only. Please use this web link to access the
national grant program.
