PROPOSAL

Proposals should be written in a font of 12 with single or double spacing between lines and at least 1-inch margins. Proposals should be a maximum of 6 pages (no appendices are allowed, undergraduates are limited to 2 pages for the project description and don't need to include an abstract), excluding cover page and list of literature cited but including the following:

Abstract

Statement of Objectives and Significance

Brief Review of Relevant Literature

Description of Methodology (detail adequate to evaluate probability of project completion; a statement of expected results would be helpful)

Time frame (research to be completed within a 12-month period)

Budget & Budget Justification. The budget should list the amount required to conduct the actual project, regardless of what we can supply. Provide the actual project cost (and other sources of funding applied for, received or expected), the amount requested from Sigma Xi, and brief justification for those expenses.

The best proposals address an explicit research hypothesis set in the context of a larger theory or model. Methods are described in as much detail as space allows. The relationship of the hypothesis to the data to be gathered is explicit, and previous work on the topic is described, with appropriate citations.
