LaTorre Family Scholarship

The LaTorre family scholarships are funded generously by College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board member L. Donald LaTorre (at right), a 1960 UMass Lowell graduate in Textile Chemistry. Since this was an inaugural year, we were able to fund one scholarship for 2003-2004 and two for 2004-2005. High School Teacher of the Year Award

This year, the UMass Lowell local chapter initiated the High School Teacher of the Year Award to honor an outstanding science teacher, one responsible for instilling in students an excitement about the sciences and technology. We are pleased to announce our first awardee, J. Laurence Lowe, a physics teacher at Masconomet Regional High School. (Larry is seen on the left with Art Mitler, chapter Treasurer.) Larry is an active participant in national, regional, and local programs to involve both teachers and students in the sciences and to forge links with colleges and universities, including UMass Lowell. Larry is also an outstanding communicator of the sciences to his many, many students.
