ABSTRACT: Vision begins in the retina, a specialized part of the brain that lines the posterior of the eye. The retina contains light-sensitive cells, rods and cones, that absorb photons and convert that energy into a neural signal. These photoreceptors express unique sets of genes that enable them to carry out phototransduction. Mechanisms by which gene expression is controlled in the retina are now being revealed. Evidence is emerging that in rods, which are responsible for night vision, important regulatory elements are conserved in many vertebrates and are found in the DNA sequences immediately upstream of the coding region. The South African frog, Xenopus laevis, offers a number of specific advantages for studying molecular mechanisms of gene regulation. Through the use of transgenic and ex vivo experimental approaches, insight is being gained into the physiology, degeneration and transcriptional control in the retina.
