The History of Executive Officers of
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society
at Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College

  • 1926-1927
    Several faculty members who were members of Sigma Xi met more than once during this period to discuss the possibility of starting a chapter at LSU. At some point in late 1927, a decision was made to proceed. On January 18, 1928, Dr. Ellinore H. Behre contacted the national office and stated, “The group had a meeting recently in which it was decided that it would profit us, and perhaps the scholarship of the school, to band ourselves together as a Sigma Xi Club… I have been deputed as acting secretary for the club to make inquiries…”. It is possible that Dr. Behre was the motivating force to bring this action about. Of the 18 signed for the club on March 6, 1928, only nine were on the faculty as per the 1926-27 catalogue. Dr. Behre was a long-time faculty member.

    Dr. Tims was diagnosed with Tuberculosis and moved his family to West Texas, and Dr. McKinley left the University. Dr. Whitcomb took over all officer duties for the Club. Agricultural Experiment Station staff members did not hold joint appointments with an instructional division.

  • 1932-35
    Dr. Warren Whitcomb, Jr., Secretary/Treasurer, took on the responsibility of keeping the Club intact. During this period there was one to four meetings each year. Attendance was too low to hold an election. He eventually forced an election for officers for the 1935-36 academic year.
