Resolution #3: submitted by Dr. Jerry Baker, Executive Director of Sigma Xi on behalf of the Sigma Xi membership and the dedicated staff of the Society.
Whereas, What began as an ideal of honor, has developed into a high ground of ethics, discipline and dedication; and
Whereas, What began as a passion for vigorous research, has remained unwavering in the pursuit of knowledge, of understanding and of challenging the very limits of humankind's ability to question and reach for answers; and
Whereas, We are companions in zealous research, and as a grand assembly, we commend the brilliant men and women who have led Sigma Xi and its members through times of wonder, times of discovery, times of accomplishment and times of reflection; and
Whereas, The success and longevity of Sigma Xi is based upon the labors of leaders at all levels who give of themselves for the benefit of students, of career scientists, of those who have retired and of the memories of those who left their mark and have passed on; now, therefore be it
Resolved, That the 112th Annual Assembly of Delegates of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society hereby honors its 125 years of national and chapter leadership; over generations of scientists of every discipline, what began as an idea of research science education has evolved into an international community of students, professionals and emeriti—including Nobel laureates; and
Resolved, That today, we honor those volunteers who gave of themselves to promote scientific research in our colleges and universities, in our business and non-profits, in our governments, and in our hearts and minds; because leaders don't lead organizations any more than scientific research is led by laboratories; leaders lead people, and without them—without those who inspire, who unify, who facilitate, who empower, who enable—we are adrift; and
Resolved, That Sigma Xi is about companionship, about unity, about purpose and distinction; our principles of honor, ethics and the diffusion of information would not have prevailed, not have survived, not have grown, were it not for our leaders; Sigma Xi could not have enabled the brilliance, creativity, and the tenacious and dogged pursuit of truth and understanding that is the very nature of the Sigma Xi member were it not for our leaders; and
Resolved, That on this, our 125th anniversary of Sigma Xi, we honor every leader of every chapter, every leader of the greater Society, and every member who has ever said, "Yes, I Will," for the benefit of Sigma Xi and its members; and
Resolved, That we thank you for your service; we thank you for your perseverance; we thank you for your dedication, your hours, your insight, and your passion; we would not be standing here today were it not for you, and the noble shoulders upon which we stand in building our great Society; and
Resolved, That we are an honor society, and today, we honor you for your leadership in the past and for your endeavors in the future, because you, and your fellow members, are the future of Sigma Xi.
Action at the meeting: This resolution passed unanimously.
