Governance Constitution & Bylaw Changes

The 1998 Assembly of Delegates approved a proposal drafted over the past year by the Sigma Xi Board of Directors that effects some substantial changes in the governance of the Society. In brief, the proposal restructures the board to reflect the broad constituencies in the Society, ensure that all constituencies are represented on the Board and reduce the size of Sigma Xi's Board of Directors from 31 to 16 voting members. A smaller Board will allow more frequent meetings so that the Board can be more regularly connected with Society affairs. In addition the proposal reaffirmed the role of chapters in the Society's governance by increasing the relative number of voting board seats that are elected by the Chapter's delegates to all but one.

The Assembly approved the specific text changes to the Constitution and Bylaws that are included at the bottom of the list below. Also included in that list, however, are several other items that summarize the proposal and explain the Executive Committee's and the Board's discussions leading up to the final version.

Finally, also below, is a moderated electronic discussion group that was held on the proposed governance changes.
