Biographical Information: I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1947. Educ: I received my BSc. in Zoology, my MSc and PhD degrees in Microbiology all from the University of Manitoba. I received support in the form of a National award from The Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada during my PhD. I was awarded the Medical Research Council of Canada Fellowship to continue my studies at the University of California San Diego for 4 years. Employment: I was awarded a career development grant by the National Research Council of Canada (University Research Fellow) aimed at bringing back Canadians to Canadian Universities (1981-85), which I took to the University of Calgary. In 1985 I was given a tenure track appointment in Biological Sciences at the Assistant Professor level, in 1989 I was awarded tenure and promotion to Associate Professor and in 94 I was made Professor. I have twice served as Chair of the Division of Cellular Molecular and Microbial Biology, and I am currently Chairman of the Biofilm Research Group. I have adjunct appointments in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and Immunology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary. I teach an introductory course for non majors in Human Biology, and advanced courses in Immunology and Virology. I run the graduate seminar program in the Division of Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology. My research interests include; the role of endogenous lectins (carbohydrate binding proteins) in establishing the integrity of the complex carbohydrate secretions found at mucosal surfaces (lungs, gastrointestinal tract, urogenital tract) and the importance of mucosal integrity in infectious diseases and inflammation at these mucosal surfaces, bacterial biofilms in diseases, and molecular archaeology. I hold 6 patents for a vaccine against Giardia lamblia infections in animals, which will come to market next year, and for a new device to assay antibiotic susceptibility of biofilm organisms

Additional Comments: I have been very active in Sigma Xi, because I believe in the promotion of Science and the multidisciplinary nature of the subject. I wish to promote these aspects of my profession and have done so in Calgary by having our chapter of Sigma Xi sponsor an High School Enrichment Program that allows High School Seniors to conduct research projects with the Faculty at the University of Calgary.
