Assembly of Delegates Business
November 10-12, 2000, Albuquerque, New Mexico
In conjunction with the Sigma Xi Forum, November 9-10, 2000
Eight-Point Motion
Each year the Assembly of Delegates considers a motion from the Board of
Directors for the dues and fees for the year beginning next July 1. This motion from the
Board contains 8 parts or items and is referred to as the eight-point motion
because the motion has 8 points, yet is traditionally voted on by the Assembly as a single
motion. This enables the Assembly to set the dues and fees in a single vote, rather than
voting separately on each of the 8 points.
The eight-point motion contains the proposed dues for each class of Sigma Xi membership
(regular, student, emeritus, etc.), the initiate and promotion fees, and the travel
subvention that will be paid for delegates to attend the next annual meeting.
The eight-point motion to be considered by the Assembly for
the year beginning 1 July 2001 contains no increases except that annual dues for regular
and life members, and the amount returned to chapters from each affiliated member, shall
be increased by the cost of living index for 2000 rounded to the nearest dollar. This
motion is essentially identical, except for the year affected, to the motion approved for
the current year by the November 1999 Assembly.
Bylaw Change
In accordance with the Society's Constitution, changes or additions to Sigma Xi's Bylaws
may be made by the Board of Directors provided that chapters are notified of any proposed
changes within 30 days of the Board action and further provided that if more than one
chapter objects to the proposed change within 90 days of the Board's action, the proposed
change is deferred to the next Assembly of Delegates for discussion and action.
On 8 June 2000, the Board of Directors recommended to the Society's chapters that the
Bylaws be amended to extend the date for submission of chapter resolutions to the Assembly
from 90 to 150 days in advance of the Assembly. Since the Ottawa and McGill Chapters filed
objections to this proposed change, the proposed change is
before the 2000 Assembly of Delegates for discussion and action. A majority vote of
the Assembly is needed for the proposed change to be implemented.
