Biographical Information: John F. Alderete, Ph.D. is Professor of Microbiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he has received over $12 million in research support and over $2 million to support minority organizations and activities. He was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1950, and he is from a family of 9 and an underprivileged background. He received two B.S. degrees (mathematics and biology) as an undergraduate student at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology at Socorro, New Mexico. His first scientific peer-review publication was from research work as an undergraduate under the direction of Dr. Gilbert Sanchez. After an internship experience with Dr. Tom H. Wilson at the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School (fall 1974), where he co-authored his second publication, he received his Ph.D. in microbiology three and a half years later (1978) from the University of Kansas at Lawrence, Kansas. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill prior to accepting a faculty position at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. He has been the director of two training grants from NIAID/NIH, one for a ten year period. He has published over 100 publications in peer-review journals and is the author of 30 book chapters and invited OP-ED editorials. His research on sexually transmitted diseases in general and on the number one non-viral sexually transmitted agent, Trichomonas vaginalis, has been presented as abstracts published in 106 proceedings of national and international scientific meetings, where he has also chaired, organized and participated in scientific symposia. He has given 210 seminars on his research work at colleges, universities and conferences across the country and throughout the world. His research has resulted in 5 patents and 2 patents-pending. His laboratory has submitted 24 sequences to the GenBank database. He has been a member of numerous study sections and panels for several of the NIH institutes, the NSF and other government agencies. He is presently a member of the National Advisory Research Council for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at NIH. More recently, Dr. Alderete served on a National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine panel to examine the Congressionally-mandated request on how NIH prioritizes its research portfolio. He serves on two editorial boards and has been an ad hoc reviewer of 25 different scientific journals. He is also often asked to speak to organizations on issues involving minorities, higher education, and the American workforce. These organizations include the President's National Science Board, the National Institutes of Health, the Federal Food and Drug Administration, the White House Office for Science and Technology Policy, and White House; One Nation; on race and health disparities. He is often asked to moderate sessions at important meetings, more recently in October 1999 a Public Policy Forum on the; Digital Divide; as part of the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee and The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. In April 2000 he moderated a session at the ORMH/NIH conference on health disparities in Washington, DC. He has given 50 presentations to minority organizations and institutions on higher education issues affecting their communities. He has given 62 presentations throughout K-12 schools in the San Antonio and So. Texas area. He has received many honors and awards, most notably the Premio Encuentro Award for Science and Technology in 1992, the single highest honor given to an Hispanic in America. He was selected as one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in America by Hispanic Magazine. He is dedicated to changing the underrepresentation of minorities in the sciences, as evidenced by his 18 Saturday Morning Science Camps for students, parents and teachers and his mentoring of 28 underrepresented minorities from undergraduate institutions and high schools as summer interns in his laboratory. He has mentored 1 M.S. student, 6 Ph.D. students, 12 postdoctoral fellows, six visiting scientists, and twenty-eight minority high school and undergraduate students. Dr. Alderete is the past-president of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in the Sciences (SACNAS), one of the fastest growing and highest quality minority science societies in our nation.

Qualifications: Dr. Rogers has more than nineteen years experience in the area of microbiological research, including experience in clinical microbiology. His research has encompassed the design, development and optimization of various methods to determine the virulence of a number of different bacteria. He has designed and performed method development for numerous biological, molecular and biochemical assays. He has instructed medical, graduate and undergraduate students in animal handling, general microbiology and diagnostic techniques. Dr. Rogers has served as an advisor in Biological Agents for various Domestic Preparedness initiatives. Dr. Rogers is involved in the design, equipping and building of a BL-3 laboratory for the U.S. Army, including protocol development, safety planning, and personnel and resource management. He is also working on designing Flyaway laboratories for various federal agencies.

Biographical Information: Ron Weinberg is a Biophysicist currently serving in the Classification Office at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He holds a Master's Degree from the University of Wyoming and was a Doctoral Candidate in Biophysics at the University of Kentucky. He worked in Biophysics research for Oak Ridge, where he worked on his Doctoral dissertation dealing with radioistope uptake studies in developing avian embryos.

Additional Comments: One of the most important goals for Sigma Xi is to ensure an adequate supply of well-trained scientists for future generations. That will be a top priority in the coming year as I assume the role of LLNL Chapter President.
