Sigma Xi and Other Activities: Member of Sigma Xi since 1984 (UC Davis chapter). He is the founding member of the Prague Sigma Xi chapter in 1995 and its former president. Since 1995 he has been a member of the Sigma Xi International Committee.

Biographical Information: Paul Pechan graduated from University of Waterloo, Canada in 1977 and received his PhD in Plant Physiology at Cambridge University, England in 1983. As a postdoc, he worked one year at UC Davis and three years at the Ottawa Research Station (Agriculture Canada). In 1988 he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship to work in Germany: from 1988-1995 he was a group leader at the Max Planck Institute (MPI fuer Biochemie). Since 1995 he works at the Technical University Munich: his research areas include stress proteins and embryogenesis in plants. He is an editor of TERRA, a new European Agricultural journal.

Because of his origins in the Czech Republic he held a number of positions in that country as well. He was a honorary visiting professor at the Agricultural University Prague(1992-1993), vice president of Prague Institute of Advanced Studies (1992-1997) and head of plant molecular laboratory at Charles University Prague (1995-2000).

Additional Comments: I believe my international experience and my long standing involvement with the Sigma Xi international committee can be useful for the position of the associate director of the Canadian/International Constituency group.

Additional Comments: I have been fully involved in helping to develop the knowledge-based society in central and eastern Europe for the past ten years. I think that Sigma Xi should become a major global organization that assists in knowledge-based society development and I intend to do all I can so that Sigma Xi achieves this important mission.
