Biographical Information: Julian A. Davies was born in England in 1955. He obtained his B.Sc.(Hons.) degree in chemistry and his Associateship of the Royal College of Science (A.R.C.S.) from Imperial College in London, England in 1976, having worked as an undergraduate with Professor David Cole-Hamilton. From 1976 to 1979 he worked for the British Ministry of Defense at the Royal Military College of Science in Shrivenham, England, while studying for his Ph.D. in chemistry with Professor Frank R. Hartley. In 1979 he received his Ph.D. from the University of London and moved to the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada as a postdoctoral research fellow, working with Professor Howard C. Clark. In 1981 he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at The University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio as assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor of chemistry in 1984 and to professor of chemistry with joint appointment as professor of medicinal chemistry in the Department of Medicinal & Biological Chemistry in 1987. In 1990 he was appointed Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry & Medicinal Chemistry and in 1999 he became Associate Dean for Natural Sciences and Mathematics within the College of Arts & Sciences. He is a member of the University of Toledo Center for Drug Design and Development and of the University of Toledo Center for Bioengineering. He holds an adjunct appointment to the Graduate Faculty of The Medical College of Ohio at Toledo. He was the 1986 recipient of The University of Toledo Sigma Xi Award for Outstanding Research, the 1987 recipient of The University of Toledo Outstanding Faculty Research Award, and held a Doermann Distinguished Lectureship at The University of Toledo in 1997. He is the author of over 100 published papers and patents and has written chapters in several leading chemistry texts. He is co-editor of the book "Selective Hydrocarbon Activation: Principles and Progress" (1990), co-author of the text "Synthetic Coordination Chemistry: Theory and Practice" (1996), and has served on a number of national and international editorial advisory boards. He has presented over fifty invited lectures at academic and industrial institutions in seven different countries. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Petroleum Research Fund, Research Corporation, the American Cancer Society (Ohio Division), the State of Ohio, and industrial sources. His research interests are in the areas of synthetic, mechanistic, and structural chemistry with applications to problems in biology and medicine, with a current focus on magnetic resonance imaging. Fifteen Ph.D. students and eight MS students have graduated under his supervision and over forty undergraduate students have performed research in his group. He has taught general, organic, and inorganic chemistry lecture and laboratory courses at the undergradu-ate level, including honors offerings, and a variety of graduate-level courses on topics ranging from spectroscopy to medicinal chemistry. In 1991 he was appointed to the first of two consecutive two-year terms as Master Teacher in the College of Arts & Sciences at The University of Toledo. In 1994 he was a recipient of the University of Toledo Outstanding Teacher Award. He has held departmental positions as Graduate Advisor, Honors Advisor and International Exchange Program Advisor. Service to the department, college, university, and chemical communities has been extensive and includes duties as a member of the Departmental Executive Committee, Chair of the college committee dealing with tenure, promotion and salaries, member of the Faculty Senate, and Chair of the Toledo Section of the American Chemical Society. He was the speaker at the 1996 Winter Commencement Exercises of the University of Toledo and gave the 100th Anniversary Research & Education Lecture to the Columbus Section of the American Chemical Society in 1997. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi and serves as the Chair-Elect of the Toledo Chapter of the latter organization.
