2001 Assembly of Delegates Business
November 9-11, 2001, Raleigh, North Carolina
In conjunction with the Sigma Xi Forum, November 8-9, 2001

Eight-Point Motion
Each year the Assembly of Delegates considers a motion from the Board of Directors for the dues and fees for the year beginning next July 1. This motion from the Board contains 8 parts or items and is referred to as "the eight-point motion" because the motion has 8 points, yet is traditionally voted on by the Assembly as a single motion. This enables the Assembly to set the dues and fees in a single vote, rather than voting separately on each of the 8 points.

The eight-point motion contains the proposed dues for each class of Sigma Xi membership (regular, student, emeritus, etc.), the initiate and promotion fees, and the travel subvention that will be paid for delegates to attend the next annual meeting.

The eight-point motion to be considered by the 2001 Assembly for the year beginning 1 July 2002 contains no increases except that annual dues for regular and life members, and the amount returned to chapters from each affiliated member, shall be increased by the cost of living index (CPI) for the 12 months ending 30 September 2001, rounded to the nearest dollar. This motion is essentially identical, except for the year affected, to the motion approved for the current year by the November 2000 Assembly.

Chapter Resolutions
Each year, chapters have the opportunity to submit substantive resolutions to be acted upon by the Assembly of Delegates, provided the resolution(s) is submitted at least 150 days in advance of the Assembly.Ê Any resolutions that are submitted by chapters are reviewed by the Committee on Resolutions who works with the chapter to put the resolution into a form that can be acted upon by the Assembly.
