Candidate's Statement: My interest in pursing this position stems partly from the state of science education in our local communities, but also from our chapters recent success at revitalization. Our chapter is proud of this achievement because of our unique geographical isolation (due to propulsion testing activities). The promotion of science education in our surrounding communities (in southern Mississippi/Louisiana) is weak, and could benefit greatly from the pool of talent present at our complex (a federal research and testing facility comprised of state and federal agencies as well as several university departments). I would like to become active at the national level to facilitate the exchange of ideas, initiatives, and public awareness between chapters in close proximity to us as well as the national organization.
Sigma Xi and Other Activities: President Elect, Gulf Coast Chapter (2001); Member of the Committee on Resolutions (2000); Annual Meeting Delegate (2000). Other activities include Sigma Gamma Epsilon (since 1982); American Geophysical Union (since 1986); Phi Kappa Phi (since 1987); Vice-President Sigma Gamma Epsilon UNO Chapter (1987).
Biographical Information: B.S. Geology, 1985, University of Kansas; M.S. Geology, 1987, University of New Orleans; Ph.D. Marine Science, 2000, University of Southern Mississippi. Current position - Oceanographer, Naval Research Laboratory. Research interests include numerical modeling of oceanic circulation, mesoscale ocean dynamics, continental shelf and boundary layer dynamics, and cross-slope frontal processes.
