Candidate's Statement: I welcome the opportunity to represent the Baccalaureate Colleges Constituency Group to Sigma
Xi’s Committee on Nominations. I am interested in developing strategies to increase participation, by both students and faculty,
in Sigma Xi chapters at baccalaureate institutions. Sigma Xi provides a platform for discussion and collaboration among different
scientific disciplines and constituency groups. Sigma Xi also positively impacts the local community through outreach programs.
Chapter activity is necessary to effectively carry out the mission of Sigma Xi. An active chapter will keep students and faculty
informed about the range of research topics and opportunities both on-campus and off-campus. Collaborations among different
constituency groups are particularly important for students and faculty at baccalaureate institutions. Sigma Xi can effectively
foster collaborations across the scientific disciplines and across the college-community interface. Sigma Xi has the potential
to be an effective "clutch" to engage the society in the scientific enterprise and there is no better place to do this than on
baccalaureate campuses because of their prominence in their communities. It is on baccalaureate campuses that the late Ernest
Boyer’s four dimensions of scholarship--discovery, application, integration and transmission—can and should be cultivated and
rewarded, and Sigma Xi can play a critically important role.
