Candidate's Statement: I was initiated into the Sigma Xi Chapter at the University of Oklahoma in 1966.  There was a substantial hiatus in my Sigma Xi participation until 1992 (I had no local chapter during this period) when a number of us at the University of Alberta decided the time was right to establish a chapter here.  That involvement had a huge impact on my interest in Sigma Xi.  It was apparent that a voice for scientific research and related issues was very much needed at our university and in the Province of Alberta.  The University of Alberta Sigma Xi Club was established in 1993 and we became a chapter just 2 years later.  I served as the first president of our chapter and was president when we achieved chapter status.  We have over 100 members and an active lecture series which meets monthly during the academic year.  We have established a "Technician of the Year Award" which recognizes persons who have provided outstanding technical support of research over the years.  That award is made annually at our general meeting.  I continued on the chapter executive for a number of years after I was president, but have since relinquished my position.  In my opinion, the University of Alberta Sigma Xi Chapter is "alive and well"; I am proud of it.  I have served the entire society by agreeing to be on the nominating committee for the past 2 years and have found that experience to be quite interesting.

Sigma Xi and Other Activities:  Sigma Xi:  Founding member and First President, University of Alberta Chapter (1993-95); Member, Executive Committee, University of Alberta Chapter (1999- ).  Other: Editorial Board, two international journals dealing with plant development.

Candidate's Statement: I believe Sigma Xi must transform itself into an organisation for the global Information Society era. The investments it has made in IT over the past three years are only the beginning. The primary economic driver is now innovation, the creation of knowledge. Knowledge is global and Sigma Xi needs to become a global knowledge organisation. Linking with the Global Knowledge Park project could provide valuable synergy towards this goal.  I also believe Sigma Xi needs to improve its presence in Europe, especially now, as the European Union enlarges. PIAS is ideally placed to assist. I stand ready to help with these two important tasks and to help guide Sigma Xi into the new era of commercial globalization where strong leadership, vision and clear communication of that vision are essential.

Sigma Xi and Other Activities: Fellow of the British Computer Society, 2001; Chartered Engineer and Eur. Ing., 2000; Senior Fellow Prague Institute for Advanced Studies, 2000; Fellow of the Institute of Analysts and Programmers, 1998; Fellow of the Institute for the Management of Information systems, 1996; Member of the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee, 1988; Member of IEEE, 1988; Member of the AOC, 1987; Member of AFCEA, 1986.

Biographical Information: Born in England in 1950, Andrew Hardie was educated at Eastbourne College and King's College, London. After twenty years in industrial and military electronics and then central government information systems and communications, Andrew became an independent information systems consultant in 1990 and has specialised in working for parliaments, especially the House of Commons, local government and international NGOs. In 1997, Andrew was responsible for the information systems that ran Tony Blairıs election campaign office. Recently, Andrew completed a major project for the Northern Ireland Assembly in Belfast and is currently working with the International European Movement in Brussels and the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on an integrated information system to support the parliamentary assembly. Andrew is a regular speaker at conferences and an active participant in democratic and civil society development, especially in southern and eastern Europe. At the Prague Institute of Advanced Studies, Andrew is the information architect for the EU-Pronet multi-media national information project, the pilot for the Global Knowledge Park project, and represents PIAS on the European Parliamentary Technology Assessment organisation.
