Candidate's Statement: Declining membership is our most critical problem. Therefore, I have been active in getting
moving members notified of Chapters in their new locality and vice versa, and in creating our new governance structure (all
Board members now elected). I have also played a lead role in making it feasible for Sigma Xi to expand into 2nd and 3rd word
countries at costs affordable to their members without need for subsidy from North American members. If reelected, I shall
continue to organize a Regional Web site & to develop a list of member expertise so chapters can use it to invite local
lecturers, pre-peer-review of planed grant applications, etc., as an enhancement of our visiting lecturer program. I shall
also try to develop a regional committee to organize political support for increased funding of scientific research by our
State/Provincial and Federal/National governments. Some of our chapters are already doing this.
Sigma Xi and Other Activities: Sigma Xi: NE Regional Director (1999 - 2002), Internat'`l Comt (99-02), NE Regional
Nominating Committee (1997 - 99), Member: Sigma Xi (1981 - date), Chapter Treasurer (1991 - date), Organized Ann. Disting.
Lecturers & Lect series, Organized High School student and teacher summer research apprenticeships (1991-96); PI on NIH grant
to fund under-represented minorities in this program (92-96). Other: Member: Amer. Coll. Radiol. Radiation Therapy
Oncology Group (1991 - date). Recipient, Certificate of Gratitude for Contributions to Science, Presidential Distinguished
Lecturer, University of Hirosaki, Japan (1979). Hon. Member, Omicron Delta Epsilon (International Economics Honor Society)
(1978). Memb Exec Comt Nassau Cty Natl Political Party (1988- date).

Candidate's Statement: An individual’s choice to participate in any organization has to be based on a convergence of his
interests and values with those of the membership-at-large. A troubling fact-of-life for all scientists is that, despite our
advances as a society, our public seems surprisingly receptive to superstition, fuzzy logic, hype, and antiscience zealotry.
Sigma Xi, with its diversity of professional expertise and commitment to education, should build on its accomplishments and act
as a powerful voice for science in public enlightenment and policy leadership. I would encourage the Society to take on a more
visible role in these areas.
Sigma Xi and Other Activities: I joined the Quinnipiac Chapter of Sigma Xi in 1995 and have served as Vice President of
the Chapter since 1996. Over this period I have assisted in assembly of the Chapter newsletter. In 1999 I had the distinct
pleasure of representing the Chapter as Delegate to the Annual Meeting. Since 1999 I have served on the Nominating Committee
of the Northeast Region. Other memberships include the American Society of Plant Biologists and AAAS.
Biographical Information: 1971: Bachelor of Arts in Biology, University of Nebraska at Omaha, 1976: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, University of Wisconsin-Madison,1976-1978: Postdoctoral Research Associate, Plant Research Laboratory, Michigan State University 1978-1979: Postdoctoral Research Associate, C.F. Kettering Research Laboratory, Yellow Springs, Ohio, 1979-present: Assistant, Associate, and currently Full Scientist, Department of Biochemistry and Genetics, The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, New Haven, Connecticut. Listed in Strathmore’s Who’s Who My current research activities center on regulation of light harvesting for photosynthesis in higher plants. This involves application of gas exchange, fluorescence, and in vivo absorbance techniques. Use of the Arabidopsis model system has enabled a molecular and genomic dimension to this project. As an employee of a state Agricultural Experiment Station I am committed to making my research interesting and relevant to, not only other professionals, but also ordinary citizens. Hence, my duties include occasional presentations to the agricultural and environmental constituencies of our state.
