Candidate's Statement: I believe that Sigma Xi has a lot to offer to its members and to society in general. The most important avenue for this is through active chapters, primarily in universities. Since the establishment of a chapter at the University of Alberta in 1995 (we were first a club in 1993), I have worked hard to increase our chapter's membership and to make sure that our presence is felt both on campus and in the greater community. Our membership now stands at about 130 and we are recognized throughout our campus; we initiated 19 new members earlier this year. My involvement with Sigma Xi has not been limited to the University of Alberta Chapter. As a member of the International Committee, I have encouraged our committee and its staff to do what we and they can do to help smaller organizations throughout the world become Sigma Xi chapters where membership would be appropriate. This is not always easy, but is perhaps the best way for the principles of our organization to have an international impact.

Sigma Xi and Other Activities: Sigma Xi: Sigma Xi member (1966-); First President, University of Alberta Chapter (1993-95); Member, Executive Committee, University of Alberta Chapter (1995 - 2000). Other: Editorial Board, two international journals dealing with plant development.

Candidate's Statement: I consider forming International Chapters to be the greatest and most rewarding challenge for The Society, in the years ahead. These new Foreign Chapters will breathe new life into our Society, spread the ideals of Companions in Research, and help intellectually, personally and socially individual researchers in many fields. My research students from Madagascar, Mauritius, India, Japan, China, Turkey, France, Yugoslavia, French Quebec and English Canada have made me aware of subtle cultural differences which need to be understood when establishing Foreign Chapters. The Mcgill-Montreal Chapter is eager to sponsor many of these new Foreign Chapters, as it has Bangalore in India,to monitor progress and put a human face on the procedures for establishing foreign chapters.
