Candidate's Statement: My interest in pursing this position stems partly from the state of science education in our local communities, but also from our chapters recent success at revitilization. Our chapter is proud of this acheivement because of our unique geographical isolation (due to NASA propulsion testing activities). The promotion of science education in our surrounding communities (in southern Mississippi/Lousiana) is weak, and could benefit greatly from the pool of talent present at our facility (a federal research and testing facility comprised of state and federal agencies as well as several university departments) . I would like to become active at the national level to facilitate the exchange of ideas, initiatives, and public awarness between chapters in close proximity to us as well as the national orginization.

Candidate's Statement: I have served on nominating committees in both the Baccalaureate Constituency Group and in the Southwest Region. Even within the sub-groups of Sigma Xi, identifying candidates willing and able to volunteer both their time and energy to Sigma Xi is a challenge. Identification of candidates to lead Sigma Xi is an even more important task, and, if elected, I will commit myself to doing the best job possible to represent the Baccalaureate Constituency Group while keeping in mind the interests of the entire organization.

Sigma Xi and Other Activities: Past President of The Claremont Colleges Chapter (2002); Vice-President (2001). Delegate to Sigma Xi Annual Meeting, 2002-2004. Candidate's Statement: I am a faculty member at an institution primarily devoted to science and engineering education. I strongly believe that we, as scientists, have a responsibility to promote understanding of science and engineering in our communities; one way to achieve this goal is through various Sigma Xi activities conducted in a community setting, which will heighten public interest in these disciplines. A leader of Sigma Xi should passionately pursue these activities, with the goal of improving human condition worldwide. The leader should encourage and award stimulating programs from local chapters, and introduce more ways for different chapters to share these ideas.

Sigma Xi and Other Activities:

  1. Served on executive committee of Wabash Valley chapter for nearly10 years, and arranged for many of the activities.
  2. Served as local chapter president, judged poster competitions both locally and nationally, had students participate in competitions, received grants.
  3. Participated in national convention twice.
  4. Recruited many new members.

Biographical Information: I am an associate professor in the department of Physics and Optical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. My primary interest is on x-ray absorption spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation. I occasionally visit Brookhaven National Laboratory to conduct my experiments, and through many grants, I have been able to involve many undergraduate students in this research. I have advised some Master's students, as well, in the area o fluorescence spectroscopy. I have been involved intimately with Sigma Xi for almost 10 years, serving in the executive committee, judging local and national poster competitions, and presiding over the local chapter for one year. I have attended the national meetings twice so far. I have been the recipient of a grant to cover Sigma Xi speaker's fees for our local chapter, and have been successful in bringing the national president-elect, Peggy Hollingsworth, to our chapter for ideas to strengthen our chapter.
