Candidate's Statement: As a scientific society, Sigma Xi serves many important functions both for its members and the professional and academic communities. However, the fostering of educational and societal needs of the community is and should also be an important activity. In this respect, my chapter has, for over fifteen years organized the Eastern South Dakota High School Science and Engineering Fair, in which over 400 students now participate annually, and the grand prize winners from which progress to the national competition. To stimulate and reward student research at the University, the chapter annually presents awards to the best MS and PhD proposals and papers, and recognizes faculty accomplishments with a research award. Furthermore, it schedules a number of lectures, including the Distinguished Lecture, for the benefit of society members and the local community. These and similar activities will continue in the future to be the focus of my chapter.
